I spent three full playthroughs wandering the mist-shrouded peaks of Where Winds Meet before I stumbled on the Where Winds Meet Change Sect hidden entrance, and I immediately knew I’d found one of the game’s most rewarding hidden areas. Most players walk right past the overgrown stone gate half-hidden by bamboo, missing out on rare martial arts scrolls, a unique companion, and one of the most satisfying boss fights in the entire game. I spent nearly two hours running in circles around the area the first time I found it, missing obvious clues and fighting enemies I could have completely avoided. If you’re tired of grinding generic side quests and want to unlock content most players never see, this guide breaks down every part of the sect so you don’t waste hours making the same mistakes I did.
Where Winds Meet Change Sect: How to Unlock the Hidden Entrance
The first mistake most players make is assuming the Change Sect is a late-game area you unlock after beating the main story. That’s not true at all – you can access it as early as level 10, as long as you complete a tiny hidden quest first. Head to the small riverside village south of the bamboo grove, and look for an old herbalist sitting on a wooden stool outside her hut. She’ll ask you to bring her three pieces of wild ginseng, which you can find growing on the north-facing slopes of the nearby mountain, or buy from the wandering merchant that stops in the village every other in-game day. Once you hand over the ginseng, she’ll give you a tattered paper invitation and teach you a short flute melody to use at the gate.
You can only access the Change Sect if your character’s wind affinity is at least level 3, otherwise the gate will remain locked even if you have the invitation and play the right melody. You can raise your wind affinity by equipping wind-themed gear, completing wind affinity side quests, or meditating at wind shrines scattered across the map. Once you have the invitation and enough affinity, head to the bamboo grove at dusk, stand in front of the blank stone wall half-covered in ivy, and play the melody the herbalist taught you. The wall will slide open to reveal the stone path leading up to the sect. If you show up during the day, the wall won’t react at all, so don’t waste your time trying to trigger it before the sun starts to set.
Key Quests and Faction Choices Inside the Change Sect
As soon as you walk through the main gate of the sect, a young novice disciple will approach you and ask why you’re there. You’ll have three distinct choices to pick from, and each one changes what content you can access and what rewards you’ll walk away with. There’s no wrong choice, but it’s good to know what you’re signing up for before you pick. I picked the challenge path on my first run, and I regretted missing out on the repeatable quests until I started a second playthrough and chose the join path instead. The three options and their associated rewards are:
- Join Path: Exclusive Gale Step martial art that lets you dash twice mid-air, 10 free wind resistance pills that reduce wind attack damage by 30% for 10 minutes, and repeatable daily sect quests that give you tons of gold and wind affinity points
- Challenge Path: Permanent Sect Breaker buff that boosts your damage against all faction enemies by 15%, 5 rare star iron ingots for upgrading your weapon to the highest tier, and the sect master’s unique Gale Sword that has a 20% chance to launch wind blades with every normal attack
- Sneak Path: Hidden Void Wind Scroll that lets you glide twice as far as normal, no combat required at any point, but you’ll be permanently locked out of the sect area after you leave, so you can’t come back for any other loot later
There’s no “best” choice here, so pick the option that fits your playstyle, not what you see other players recommend online. If you love grinding for loot and building up faction reputation, the join path is perfect. If you just want to fight a fun boss and get a strong weapon, go for the challenge path. If you’re a stealth main who hates unnecessary combat, the sneak path is made for you. One small tip: if you pick the join path, you can still challenge the sect master later after you raise your faction reputation to level 5, so you can get both the join and challenge path rewards if you’re willing to put in the extra time.
How to Beat the Change Sect Master Boss Fight
If you pick the challenge path or unlock the boss fight via the join path, you’ll face off against the Change Sect Master, one of the most fun and fair boss fights in the entire game. He uses only wind-based attacks, so all his moves are fast and have long range, but they all have clear tells you can learn to dodge easily. The fight has three distinct phases, each with new attacks to watch out for. In the first phase, he’ll mostly use fast wind blades that he throws from a distance. These track you slightly if you dodge backwards, so always dodge left or right to avoid them, and close the gap between you as fast as you can to land melee hits.
Once he gets to 70% health, he’ll enter the second phase, where he summons three small wind tornados that chase you around the arena for 10 seconds each. Don’t try to outrun them, just run behind one of the thick stone pillars in the arena, and the tornados will break against the pillar without hurting you. The sect master is weak to fire attacks, so equip a fire infused weapon or bring fire talismans to cut the fight time in half. When he gets to 20% health, he’ll enter the third and final phase, where he flies up into the air and charges a massive AOE wind attack that will take 90% of your health if you get hit by it. You’ll see a big red circle marking the attack area on the ground, so use your dash or Gale Step to get out of the circle before he lands the attack.
If you die to the sect master three times in a row, the game will give you a temporary 20% defense buff for the fight, so don’t feel bad about taking advantage of that if you’re struggling. I died four times my first run, and that buff was the only reason I finally beat him. The boss fight is all about pattern recognition, so don’t get frustrated if you don’t beat him on your first try.
Hidden Loot Most Players Miss in the Change Sect
Even if you beat the boss and complete all the main quests in the sect, there’s tons of hidden loot most players never find. I missed all of it on my first playthrough, and I only found it when I was making notes for this guide on my third run. First, there’s a secret room behind the large oak bookcase in the main hall of the sect. To open it, walk up to the bookcase and pull the third orange book from the left on the top shelf. The bookcase will slide open to reveal a small room with a white fox sitting on a cushion. If you interact with the fox, it will join you as a permanent companion, and it gives you a passive +2 boost to your wind affinity as long as it’s active.
You can only get the fox companion if you don’t attack any sect disciples when you first enter, even if you’re on the challenge path, so hold off on fighting anyone until you pick up the fox first. Second, head to the back garden of the sect at midnight, and you’ll see a glowing pink cherry tree in the far corner. If you meditate under it for 30 seconds, you’ll get a permanent +5 boost to your max health, which stacks with all other health boosts you get from gear or quests. Third, there’s a hidden wooden chest under the rickety wooden bridge leading up to the sect master’s arena. Jump down under the bridge and open it to get 20,000 gold and two star iron ingots, which you can use to upgrade your weapon. If you joined the sect, you can also plant wild ginseng seeds in the small planters in the back garden, and they’ll grow into harvestable ginseng every 24 in-game hours. That means you can farm as much ginseng as you want for free, instead of paying 500 gold a piece for it from merchants.
Whether you’re here for the unique boss fight, rare martial arts scrolls, or just to check off a hidden area on your map, the Where Winds Meet Change Sect is easily one of the most rewarding hidden spots in the entire game. Don’t rush through the area just to beat the boss and move on to the next quest. Take time to explore every corner, talk to all the disciples, and pick up the hidden loot you won’t find anywhere else. If you follow the tips in this guide, you’ll walk away with way more rewards than you expected, no matter what playstyle you prefer. I still go back to the sect every playthrough, even when I know all the secrets, because it’s such a well-designed area with a ton of personality.
