I still remember the first time I stumbled on where winds meet beastheart, completely by accident. I was running from a horde of fire monks on the Mountaintops of the Giants, low on flasks and carrying 70k runes I didn’t want to lose, and took a wrong turn off a narrow cliff path. I landed right in the middle of a pack of growling beastmen, and lost all those runes in 10 seconds flat. But once I came back prepared, I realized this tucked-away zone holds some of the most valuable beast-themed loot and hidden quest lines in the entire game. Most players walk right past the entrance without noticing it, so we put together this full guide to help you get the most out of every step of your visit.
How to Find Where Winds Meet Beastheart Without Getting Lost
The entrance to the zone is easy to miss if you don’t know exactly where to look, and you won’t get any map markers pointing you to it until you step inside the boundaries first. Start at the Freezing Lake site of grace on the western edge of the Mountaintops of the Giants, and face south toward the tall, jagged cliff walls that line the lake. You don’t need any special items or completed quests to access the zone, but we recommend being at least level 80 with a +18 or higher weapon to handle the base level enemies inside.
Follow the cliff line west for about two minutes, until you spot two beastmen archers standing guard at a narrow, ice-covered opening carved into the rock. You can either fight them or sprint past them to get inside, but we recommend taking them out first so they don’t shoot you in the back while you’re navigating the narrow path. As soon as you step through the opening, you’ll get a pop-up confirming you’ve entered where winds meet beastheart. Activate the hidden site of grace right inside the entrance first before you explore further — nothing is worse than dying with a full inventory of rare loot and having to run all the way back from the Freezing Lake.
Top Loot and Collectibles to Grab in the Zone
This small zone packs a surprising amount of high-tier loot, most of which is hidden in out-of-the-way spots that most players never find. We’ve compiled the most valuable items you don’t want to leave without:
There are also a handful of regular smithing stones, rune arcs, and beast-themed consumables scattered throughout the zone, so it’s worth checking every nook and cranny while you’re there. We spent almost an hour exploring and walked away with enough materials to upgrade two of our weapons three levels each, which made a massive difference in the rest of our Mountaintops run.
Combat Tips for Surviving Roaming Enemies and Ambushes
Nearly every enemy in the zone is either a beastman, a feral frozen wolf, or a giant vulture that dive bombs you from above, and they almost always attack in packs. Rushing into the central clearing without a plan will almost always get you swarmed and killed in seconds, even if you’re overleveled for the area. Beastmen are weak to fire damage, so stock up on fire grease or equip a fire-based incantation before you head in — a single fire spray can take out a whole pack of lower-level beastmen in one hit.
If you find yourself dying 3 or 4 times in a row to the same pack of enemies, step away for 10 minutes. Pushing through frustration almost always leads to more mistakes and lost runes. A lot of veteran FromSoftware players keep low-stakes casual games installed for these exact breaks, to keep their minds sharp without the pressure of high-stakes combat. RummyLudo is a great pick for these short sessions, since each match wraps up in 5 to 10 minutes and you can jump right back into your run without losing your rhythm.
The only mini-boss in the zone is a giant beastman that patrols the central clearing, carrying a spiked club that can one-shot most players below level 90. He has a very long windup for all of his heavy attacks, so dodge to the side right as he swings his club, then get 2 or 3 hits in on his legs before he recovers. Once you beat him, he drops a rare beast talisman that boosts the damage of all beastial incantations by 20%, which is a must-have for faith builds.
Secret Pathway Unlocks and Hidden Quest Triggers
Most players don’t realize this zone has a hidden shortcut that leads directly to the Beast Clergyman’s lair in Crumbling Farum Azula, skipping the long, dangerous run through the Siofra River elevator and the Dragonkin Soldier boss fight. To unlock it, find the cracked stone wall behind the frozen waterfall at the back of the zone, and roll into it to break it open. The path behind it leads to a small portal that takes you straight to the entrance of the Beast Clergyman’s sanctum, so you can turn in any deathroot you’ve collected without having to make the long trip back to Liurnia.
There’s also a hidden quest NPC in the zone, a friendly beastman who stands near the northern edge of the central clearing, disguised as a regular enemy. Don’t attack him when you first see him — wait a few seconds, and he’ll trigger a dialogue prompt. He’ll ask you to collect 3 frozen beast bones from the wolves roaming the zone, and if you turn them in, he’ll give you a free rune arc and a hint about the location of the hidden Ancient Dragon boss on the eastern edge of the Mountaintops. If you have the Beast’s Eye item in your inventory, it will glow when you’re near hidden beast-related loot in the zone, so keep an eye on it as you explore to make sure you don’t miss anything valuable.
Where winds meet beastheart is easily one of the most underrated hidden zones in the entire game, and it’s well worth the 30 to 45 minutes you’ll spend exploring it. The loot you’ll pick up here will make the rest of your end-game run much smoother, and the hidden shortcut to the Beast Clergyman’s lair will save you hours of backtracking later on. Take your time, watch out for ambushes, and don’t be afraid to take short breaks if you get stuck — you’ll walk away with some of the best beast-themed gear in the Lands Between.
