I lost count of how many times I died to the Mountaintops of the Giants’ random ice golem ambushes during my first playthrough. I was so focused on rushing to the Fire Giant boss fight to progress the main story that I skipped almost every unmarked side path along the way. It wasn’t until my third run, when I was hunting for every somber smithing stone to upgrade my dual Rivers of Blood build, that I stumbled on a tiny, ash-dusted canyon I’d never noticed before: where winds meet wildfire spark. Most online walkthroughs barely mention this spot, but it’s packed with high-value loot, an optional boss that drops one of the best faith build seals in the game, and a secret shortcut that cuts 10 minutes off your run to the Fire Giant arena every time you die. This guide breaks down everything you need to know to find, explore, and get the most out of this hidden landmark.
Where Winds Meet Wildfire Spark: Exact Location and How to Reach It
You won’t find this spot marked on any default map, so you’ll need to start from the Freezing Lake site of grace on the western side of the Mountaintops of the Giants. Face southeast, and ride Torrent past the pack of spirit wolves that spawn near the ice patch at the edge of the lake. You’ll see a large ice golem patrolling the edge of a narrow canyon half-hidden by snow drifts, and you’ll notice small embers floating in the air as you get closer. That’s the entrance to the area.
Don't ride Torrent through the narrow canyon entrance—I made that mistake my first time, and two hidden fire archers perched on the canyon walls hit me at the same time, knocking me into a deep crevice that killed me instantly. Dismount when you’re 50 feet from the entrance, and pick the archers off one by one with a bow or long-range spell before you head in. They only have 300 health each, so they go down fast even with a basic bow.
You’ll know you’re in the right spot when you see small stone arches draped in burnt red cloth lining the canyon walls, and the sound of wind whistling through the rocks mixes with the faint crackle of distant fire. The whole area is coated in a thin layer of ash, so it stands out sharply from the snow-covered landscape around it.
Hidden Loot You Can Unlock At This Remote Landmark
This tiny canyon has more high-value loot than most marked dungeons in the Mountaintops, and none of it requires fighting a horde of enemies to get. You just need to know where to look, and keep an ear out for the faint buzzing of the invisible scarab that roams the perimeter. All the loot here is useful for every build type, even if you don’t use faith or fire-based attacks.
- Somber Smithing Stone 8: Hidden under a loose rock next to the charred black tree at the center of the clearing, this stone lets you upgrade any unique weapon to +8 without spending thousands of runes at a merchant. There are only three free Somber Smithing Stone 8s in the entire Mountaintops area, so this is one of the most valuable loot drops in the region.
- Flame Spout Ash of War: Dropped by the invisible scarab that runs laps around the canyon perimeter. You can hear its faint buzzing sound if you stand still for 10 seconds near the entrance, and you can use a lantern or the Starlight spell to make its outline visible so you can hit it. This Ash of War lets you spray a continuous stream of fire from your weapon for as long as you hold the skill button, and it melts ice enemies in the Mountaintops in seconds.
- Fireproof Dried Liver Recipe: Found in a rusted iron chest tucked behind the broken stone wall on the north side of the area. This recipe lets you craft items that cut fire damage by 40% for 3 minutes, which is a huge help for the upcoming Fire Giant fight, where almost all his attacks deal fire damage.
I use the Flame Spout Ash of War on every strength and faith build I run now. It makes taking out the giant ice golems scattered around the Mountaintops trivial, and it even works well against the first phase of the Fire Giant if you get close enough to his feet. You can also sell any extra Fireproof Dried Livers you craft for 500 runes each, which adds up fast if you stock up before heading to the Consecrated Snowfield.
Optional Boss Fight: The Fallen Fire Monk
As soon as you pick up the Fireproof Dried Liver Recipe from the chest, a Fallen Fire Monk will spawn from the smoke next to the charred tree at the center of the clearing. He’s an optional boss, so you can run past him if you don’t want to fight, but his drops are well worth the 5 minutes it takes to beat him. He has around 7,000 health on a normal playthrough, which is less than half the health of the Fire Giant, so he’s pretty manageable even if you’re underleveled.
Equip at least 20% fire resistance before engaging this boss—his unblockable fire AOE attack will one-shot most players with lower resistance, even if you’re at level 100. You can get 20% fire resistance easily by equipping the Flame Drake Talisman you can find in the Liurnia of the Lakes region, or by popping a Fireproof Dried Liver before the fight starts.
The Fallen Fire Monk has a very predictable attack pattern if you pay attention. His three-hit combo always ends with a wide swing that leaves him open for two to three heavy attacks, and his fire AOE attack has a 3 second wind up that gives you plenty of time to run out of range. I beat him on my first try with a strength build by sticking close to his side to avoid his long-range fire blasts, and only backing off when I saw him start to charge his AOE attack. When you beat him, he drops the Fire Monk Seal, which boosts incantations of the Fire Monk order by 15%, making it one of the best mid-game seals for faith builds.
Secret Shortcut To The Fire Giant Arena Unlocked After Clearing The Area
Right after the Fallen Fire Monk dies, the large stone wall behind the charred tree will crumble, revealing a hidden cave that leads directly to the back entrance of the Fire Giant arena. There are only a handful of weak jellyfish enemies inside the cave, so you won’t have to fight any more tough enemies to unlock the shortcut. There’s also a hidden site of grace inside the cave that you can activate as a spawn point.
If you’re planning to farm the Fire Giant for his remembrance to get both of his unique weapons, this shortcut will save you hours of running back and forth. Before I found this path, I had to run 10 minutes past ice golems, wolf packs, and frost bats every time I died to the Fire Giant’s annoying second phase roll attack. Now I just spawn at the hidden site of grace and walk 30 seconds straight to the boss fog wall.
There’s also a small side quest tied to this area if you come back after you beat the Fire Giant. A friendly Fire Monk NPC will spawn next to the charred tree, and he’ll give you a quest to track down a lost flame relic in the Consecrated Snowfield. Completing that quest gives you the Flame Grant Me Strength incantation, which boosts your physical and fire damage by 20% for 30 seconds, one of the best buffs for strength and faith builds in the game.
Open world games are at their best when they reward curious players who wander off the beaten path, and that’s exactly what you get with spots like where winds meet wildfire spark. You don’t have to stop and explore every tiny crevice you see, but taking 15 minutes to clear this small area will give you loot that makes the rest of the Mountaintops of the Giants way easier, plus a shortcut that will save you tons of time if you struggle with the Fire Giant fight. Next time you’re wandering the frozen peaks, skip the direct path to the main boss for a few minutes and check out this hidden spot—you won’t regret it.
