If you’ve spent dozens of hours roaming the mist-shrouded mountains and bamboo forests of Where Winds Meet, you’ve almost certainly heard players whisper about Tian Ying, the elusive wandering boss that only spawns under very specific conditions. I spent three full in-game cycles tracking him down last month, after missing three separate spawn windows because I didn’t have the right prerequisites unlocked. Figuring out where winds meet tian ying isn’t just about checking a map coordinate, though – you have to meet hidden requirements, bring the right gear, and prepare for a fight that tests every martial arts skill you’ve earned so far.
Where Winds Meet Tian Ying: Exact Spawn Requirements and Location
Tian Ying doesn’t show up on any default in-game map, and you won’t get a quest marker pointing you to his location unless you’ve completed a specific set of steps first. First, you need to finish the full "Wandering Swordsman" side quest chain that you pick up from the old innkeeper in Bamboo Creek Village. The quest has you deliver three letters to isolated hermits across the map, and most players skip it early on because it doesn’t offer obvious rare rewards. I skipped it on my first playthrough, and spent two full in-game nights camped at his supposed spawn point with no sign of him, so don’t make that same mistake.
If you’ve met all the prerequisites, you’ll see a faint blue glow around the stone arch when you arrive, which confirms where winds meet tian ying is active for your play session. His spawn window only runs between 2AM and 5AM in-game time, when the weather is heavy wind with light rain. You can’t fast travel to the peak if you want the spawn to trigger – you have to hike up the eastern trail from Bamboo Creek Village, and you can’t use a mount at any point on the hike. If another player on your server has already defeated him recently, you’ll have to wait 12 real-time hours for his next possible spawn.
Pre-Fight Prep You Can’t Skip Before Facing Tian Ying
Even if you’ve already confirmed where winds meet tian ying is spawning, don’t rush up the mountain without checking your gear first. Tian Ying is a wind-aligned boss with extremely fast attack speeds, so heavy armor that slows your movement is basically useless here. Stick to light or medium armor sets that boost your agility and dodge stats, and swap out any defense-focused accessories for ones that boost stamina recovery.
Wind resistance is the most important stat to prioritize for this fight – 70% or higher wind resistance will cut the damage from his most powerful AOE attack by half, and reduce the knockback effect so you don’t get thrown off the mountain edge mid-fight. Bring at least 3 high-grade stamina recovery pills, because you’ll be dodging constantly through most of the fight, and running out of stamina at the wrong time will get you one-shot.
Don’t bring any companions with you to this fight, either. I made this mistake on my first attempt, and Tian Ying one-shot my max-level tiger companion 10 seconds into the battle, which gave him a 30% damage buff for the rest of the fight. He will always prioritize companion summons first, and every companion he kills boosts his attack power, so it’s far better to fight him alone. Make sure your internal skill is set to Gale Breathing, too – it gives you a 15% passive dodge buff against all wind-based attacks for the full duration of the fight.
Tian Ying Boss Fight Mechanics and Winning Strategies
Tian Ying has four core attack patterns you need to memorize to beat him without wasting all your revives. He doesn’t have any random untelegraphed attacks, so once you learn the tells for each move, you can counter almost every hit he throws:
- Thousand Wind Slash: He spins his sword three times in a row, sending out sharp wind blades in a 180-degree arc in front of him. Dodge backwards twice to get out of the range of the blades, then dash forward immediately to hit his exposed back while he recovers from the animation. He has a 2-second stun vulnerability here, so you can land a full 4-hit light attack combo before he recovers.
- Gale Pull: He holds his sword up to the sky, and you’ll see a faint blue suction effect pulling you toward him. Don’t try to run away – the suction will pull you back no matter how fast you dash. Hold the block button until the animation ends, then counter with a quick heavy attack to stagger him for 1 second.
- Cloud Summon: He leaps 10 feet into the air and summons three identical wind clones that attack you from three different directions. Don’t waste time attacking all three – the real Tian Ying will have a faint golden glow around the hilt of his sword. Hit that clone once, and the entire attack will cancel, and he’ll fall to the ground stunned for 3 seconds.
When Tian Ying drops to 30% health, he enters his second phase, where all his attacks are 20% faster, and he unlocks a one-hit kill move called Wind Burial. You’ll see the tell immediately: he crouches low, and his sword turns bright, glowing blue. Don’t try to block this attack – it will break any guard instantly, even if you have a max-level shield. Dodge to the side three times in a row to get out of the attack range, then dash in to hit him while he recovers. Once you get the timing down, the second phase is actually easier than the first, because his attack patterns stay exactly the same, just faster.
Rewards You Earn for Beating Tian Ying
The rewards for beating Tian Ying are well worth the hours you’ll spend tracking him down and learning his attack patterns. First, you get a guaranteed 5-star legendary drop every time you beat him: Tian Ying’s Gale Sword, which has a 20% chance to trigger an extra wind blade on every normal attack that deals 50% of your base damage. I’ve been using this sword for 20+ hours of playtime now, and it still outperforms every other 5-star sword I’ve found for my agility build.
You also unlock the Gale Step movement skill, which lets you dash three times in a row without consuming any stamina. This skill is game-changing for both exploration and other boss fights, because it lets you cross large gaps quickly and dodge out of the way of AOE attacks without burning through your stamina bar. You’ll also get 500 rare wind essence crafting materials, which you can use to upgrade wind-aligned weapons and armor to their max level.
If you beat Tian Ying without taking any damage, you also get the exclusive "Wind Chaser" title that displays next to your name in multiplayer lobbies and co-op sessions. Beating him the first time also unlocks the hidden "Last Swordsman" side quest, which tells the full backstory of Tian Ying, why he’s hiding out on Qingyun Mountain, and gives you access to a hidden chest with 1000 gold and a rare permanent stat boost item that increases your wind resistance by 10% forever.
Tracking down and beating Tian Ying is one of the most rewarding side challenges in Where Winds Meet, and it’s well worth the time you’ll spend learning his spawn rules and attack patterns. Even if you don’t main a sword build, the movement skill and permanent stat boost make the grind worth it. Next time you’re roaming the Qingyun Mountain area on a windy, rainy night, make the hike up the eastern trail – you’ll be glad you took the time to find where winds meet tian ying, and walk away with some of the best loot in the game.
