Where Wind Meets Fire: Complete Boss Fight Guide & Pro Winning Tips

I still remember slamming my controller down after my 12th straight death at where wind meets fire. I’d gone into the fight cocky, fresh off beating the Fire Giant on my second try, and assumed the next endgame encounter would be a cakewalk. Three hours later, I’d burned through all my consumables, lost 120k runes, and still hadn’t made it past the second phase. If you’re stuck on this fight too, you’re not alone. It’s consistently ranked as one of the three hardest encounters in the entire game, but it’s far from unbeatable if you come prepared with the right knowledge.

What to Expect Before Reaching Where Wind Meets Fire

First off, this fight isn’t accessible until you’re deep into the endgame. You’ll have to beat the Fire Giant at the Mountaintops of the Giants, trigger the cutscene that burns the Erdtree, and then make your way through the first half of Crumbling Farum Azula to reach the arena. The path to the fight has two tricky dragon knight minions right before the fog gate, so don’t burn all your flasks clearing them if you can avoid it.

Before you even walk through the fog, there are a few non-negotiables you need to check off your list. First, make sure you have minimum 40 vigor if you’re playing a melee build, 35 at the absolute lowest for ranged or mage builds. The boss’s second phase attacks can one-shot you if you’re below 30 vigor, even with solid armor. You also need to prioritize fire and holy damage negation on your armor and talismans—those two damage types make up 90% of the attacks he throws at you. Finally, bring a bleed or frost-infused weapon if you can; both status effects proc quickly on this boss and cut down his massive health pool far faster than raw damage alone.

Key Attack Patterns You Need to Memorize for the Fight

This fight has two distinct phases, and you can’t just brute force your way through either by spamming attacks. The first phase pits you against the Beast Clergyman, a slower, more methodical fighter who relies on quick swipes and long-range projectile barrages. His most dangerous attack in this phase is the three-swipe combo that ends with a leap slam—if you get caught by the first two swipes, you’ll almost always get hit by the third, so roll away as soon as you see him start the animation.

Once you get his health down to 50%, the second phase triggers, and he turns into Maliketh, the Black Blade. This is where most players hit a wall. His attacks are twice as fast, and every hit from his black blade applies a second phase black blade DoT that ticks away 5% of your health per second for three seconds if you don’t heal it immediately. The most common mistake players make here is rolling too early for his dash attack—you need to roll 0.5 seconds after he initiates his dash, not when he first moves. If you roll too early, he’ll adjust his path mid-dash and hit you anyway.

For example, I used to roll as soon as I saw him lean back to dash, and I got hit 9 out of 10 times. Once I waited until I could see the glint of his blade moving toward me, I dodged successfully almost every time. It takes a little practice to get the timing down, but it’s the single most important skill to learn for this phase.

Optimal Loadouts and Consumables for This Encounter

You don’t need a fully min-maxed build to beat this fight, but bringing the right items will cut your number of attempts in half. I’ve beaten this fight with every build type from pure melee to pure caster, and these are the items I never leave home without:

  • Silver-Pickled Fowl Foot: Pop one right before you enter the fog gate, and you’ll get a 30% boost to rune gain when you finally beat the fight. It’s a small bonus, but it makes up for all the runes you’ll lose during failed attempts.
  • Flameproof Dried Liver: Boosts fire damage negation by 20% for 3 minutes, which cuts the damage from his first phase fire attacks by almost a quarter. Pop one right as the fight starts, and reapply it if the fight goes longer than 3 minutes.
  • Holyproof Dried Liver: Negates 20% of holy damage, which directly reduces the damage from the black blade DoT. I always pop one right as the second phase triggers to minimize the risk of dying to chip damage.
  • Bloody Slash Ash of War: If you’re using a melee build, this fast bleed buildup can take off 1/3 of his health in just two hits. It uses a small amount of your own health to cast, but the tradeoff is more than worth it for the damage output.
  • Mimic Tear Spirit Ash: Even after its nerf, the Mimic Tear is the best spirit ash for this fight. It draws aggro almost perfectly, giving you plenty of time to get in free hits or heal when you’re low on health. Just make sure you upgrade it to +10 before you bring it, otherwise it’ll die in one hit.

For build-specific tips, melee builds should focus on fast, light weapons that let you get in one or two hits before rolling away. Heavy greatswords work too, but you have to be far more careful with your attack timing. Mage builds should skip slow, high-damage spells like Comet Azur unless he’s staggered, and stick to fast spells like Glintstone Pebble or Rock Sling for consistent damage. Faith builds have a huge advantage here, as Black Flame does percentage-based damage that ignores a big chunk of his defense.

Common Mistakes That Make This Fight 10x Harder

Even if you have the right loadout and know all the attack patterns, small mistakes will make this fight feel impossible. I’ve helped dozens of friends beat this fight, and these are the three mistakes I see most often.

First, don’t rely on medium shields to block his attacks. Most medium shields only block 50-60% of holy and fire damage, so even if you block a hit perfectly, you’ll still take massive damage and lose most of your stamina. Don’t rely on medium shields for this fight—either learn to roll, or use a greatshield with 100% physical and high holy/fire negation if you really prefer blocking.

Second, never stay more than 10 feet away from him for longer than 3 seconds. If you’re too far away, he’ll trigger a barrage of 8-10 long-range projectiles that are almost impossible to dodge completely. If you need to heal, roll away to a safe distance, heal as fast as you can, then run right back toward him immediately. Staying close also limits the number of high-damage attacks he can use, since most of his long-range moves only trigger when you’re far away.

Third, don’t waste all your stamina spamming attacks. This fight rewards patience over brute force. You’ll usually only have time for one or two hits between his attack combos, so don’t try to squeeze in a third hit that will leave you out of stamina when he starts his next attack. I can’t tell you how many times I died because I tried to get one extra hit in instead of rolling away.

At the end of the day, the fight at where wind meets fire is all about practice and patience. You might die 10 times, you might die 30 times, but every attempt will teach you a little more about his attack patterns and timing. Once you finally land the killing blow, you’ll get one of the most powerful remembrances in the game, and you’ll be one step closer to beating the final boss. If you’re still stuck after trying all these tips, take a 15 minute break, walk away from the game, and come back with fresh eyes. You’d be surprised how much easier the fight feels when you’re not frustrated from repeated deaths.
